How to Get Rid of Mercury Poisoning
Mercury poisoning (also known as hydrargyria or mercurialism) or elevated levels of mercury in the blood is much more common today with the current health trends. This is primarily because people think they are being healthy (and for the most part they are) by eating large quantities of fish. Mercury concentrates in fatty tissue (it is lipophilic). Unfortunately the brain is mostly fat so this is what it primarily impacts (so calling someone a fat head is true). The symptoms of mercury poisoning include impaired coordination and loss is sensory perceptions - eg blurred vision or hearing problems. It can also cause confusion and mental problems. In some cases, there are rashes. It is easy for a doctor to order a simple blood test to determine the mercury level in a person. If you have a problem, work with a physician.
7 ways to get rid of mercury poisoning include:
1.Eat less fish for a while. Usually mercury levels will go down within a month of eating no or little fish.
2.Figure out if there might be another source than fish for mercury in your blood. The most obvious would be fillings. They contain mercury and can be removed and replaced by newer materials that contain no mercury. Mercury can also occur in an industrial use situation. If exposed to mercury, wash throughly with soap and water. Wash all clothing that may have come in contact with mercury.
3.Avoid fish that is high in mercury. The older the fish, the more mercury they contain. The higher up the food chain, the higher the mercury. Older fish tend to be larger so simply choose to eat smaller fish in a species. Fish to avoid include Marlin, Orange roughy, Swordfish, Tilefish, shark, mackeral and ahi tuna. Fish to eat in small quantities include Bluefish, Sea bass, Grouper and canned tuna. Sushi is a prime offender.
4.Traditional medicine uses chelation therapies to absorb mercury. Ask your doctor for help in choosing what is right for you. Most times dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). Other chelating agents, such as 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) are used.
5.There are good books on the topic that are worth reading.
6.Alternative therapies suggest the place to start is with a liver detox program. The liver is responsible for filtering toxins from the blood. Healthy liver, healthy blood and ultimately healthy brain. Take antioxidants and free radical scanvengers to help bind and excrete mercury, including a good multivitamin supplement and extra selenium, vitamin C, seaweed, is a tried and tested way to remove mercury from the system
7.Exercise. Getting the blood flowing helps the blood to be cleaned. Aerobic work great but even any motion or soft movement works.
